General Overview

The Academic Performance Center is a free, peer-to-peer tutoring service available to all of DSU’s students. The center offers a study hall, one-on-one appointments, and online tutoring and focuses on helping students improving their ability to study independently. The primary concern of the Academic Performance Center is to teach students how to address their own study concerns, not necessarily correct all of their mistakes. Most importantly, however, the Academic Performance Center recognizes that it’s most successful when collaborating with DSU’s faculty. The resources below have been developed to allow faculty to collaborate with the Academic Performance Center to ensure student success.

Enhanced Services

The Academic Performance Center assists students from specific campus groups or programs with enhanced tutoring services. Students using enhanced services can enjoy extended, private tutoring sessions and more appointment availability to meet their tutoring needs. If your program is interested in enhanced services, please contact the Academic Performance Center Coordinator directly.

Starfish Referrals

DSU faculty now have the ability to refer students to the Academic Performance Center directly through Starfish, which allows the Academic Performance Center to contact students directly to make appointments. Once the Academic Performance Center has worked with a referred student, faculty will receive an email notification along with consultation notes from the student’s tutor. Classroom Visits

The Academic Performance Center always welcomes the opportunity to visit classrooms to familiarize students with the center’s services and staff. Most presentations last only 5-10 minutes and provide students with a general overview of our services, resources, and policies. We believe that these brief presentations greatly increase our accessibility to students and help students feel more comfortable when visiting the Academic Performance Center. To schedule a classroom visit, please contact the Academic Performance Center directly.

Recommending Our Services

We encourage faculty to promote our services to students (regardless of academic achievement). Although we believe that classroom visits and peer reviews are two of the most effective means of encouraging students to visit the Academic Performance Center, there are numerous ways for faculty members to promote the Academic Performance Center’s services:

1. Emphasizing studying as a process and discussing the benefit of sharing work with a peer
2. Linking to the Academic Performance Center’s website and supplementary materials whenever possible
3. Arranging a classroom visit close to an assignment’s due date
4. Providing the Academic Performance Center with copies of assignment descriptions and expectations
5. Stopping by the Academic Performance Center to talk with tutors and learn more about the center’s resources

Required Visits and Extra Credit

We believe that requiring students to visit the Academic Performance Center or offering extra credit for attendance can provide students with the necessary push to work with a tutor. We’ve found that students required to visit the Academic Performance Center often continue to visit the center even after they are no longer required. Additionally, because the Academic Performance Center provides notification to professors whose students have visited the Academic Performance Center, it is easy for faculty to hold their students accountable for working in the Academic Performance Center.
